The kids and I were at the pool one yesterday and the girls had a conversation that both warmed my heart and made me laugh.
Anna: Mama, I'm beautiful brown.
Me: Yes, you are!
Agnes: And I'm brown too.
Anna: Yeah, Agnes is brown and Mya is brown too. God made us beautiful brown.
Me: Yes, He did. Who else is brown?
Anna: No one, just me, Agnes and Mya.
Me: What about Anthony?
Agnes: Anthony's not brown. He's light.
Me: Well, what color am I?
Agnes and Anna:
Anna: Let's go down the yellow slides.
It warms my heart to hear them talking about how beautiful God made their brown skin. And their perspective is hilarious. Anthony is most definitely brown, but standing next to the girls, he does look "light". Stand him next to my niece Cecelia, and he looks super brown. They made me giggle.
And another gem while I'm at it...
Agnes (looking at a picture of herself): Wow, I look really great in that picture! I should smile like that again next time!
She doesn't lack confidence, does she?
We had a very fun 4th of July last week. We went to a local town's parade and festival. It was the perfect length for a parade. No more than 20 minutes. And lots of candy. The kids loved it. We also played at the park and had some carnival type food there.
We cooked out that evening and had fun with water balloons and crafts in the back yard. And a little patriotic baking.
We went and got some Frozen Yogurt (where my sister's the manager). Then we took the kids to the fireworks. The girls had been talking about them for weeks. Agnes and Mya had never been to fireworks (at least, that's what Agnes said. And she's usually pretty accurate...). They all loved them (except Anna who hid her face the whole time...).

My dear Mya is constantly keeping us on our toes. We had a lovely trip the ER with her last week. She threw a tantrum, threw herself to the floor, hit her chin on the carpet so hard that she sent her top teeth through her bottom lip. Huge gaping hole in her mouth. Gushing blood everywhere.
We spent four hours in the ER to receive 2 stitches (that took 5 minutes). And she's got a huge lip. Hopefully it goes back to normal before she's in my brother-in-law's wedding in two weeks!
I've started reading chapter books to the girls before bed each night. So far we've read Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web. They absolutely loved Charlotte's web (we just finished it tonight) and they can't wait to watch the movie tomorrow.
Does anyone have any good chapter book recommendations for 2 and 3 year olds? They understand more than I thought, and I have quite the list for when they're older, but I can't really think of any beyond E.B. White's other popular one, Trumpet of the Swan. Anna can't wait to read that one!
Okay, one more kid quote. The girls are just cracking us up lately!
Agnes is a little obsessed with the fact that my sister is pregnant (baby Gianna, due in October!). So she's incredibly curious about the whole thing. This conversation occurred in the car while I was driving.
Agnes: How do people make babies?
Anna: Like this!
I quickly whipped around to see what Anna was doing... As my heart pounded...
She was drawing a baby on her magna doodle.
I breathed a big sigh of relief and quickly said, "Yes, great job Anna!"
The big girls passed another level of swim lessons! They really are picking it up quickly and are showing off all of their new skills when we go to the pool. It's fun to see them swimming around like big kids!

Looks like a fun Independence Day.
I remember my Mom reading me the first couple books in the Little House on the Prairie series as a toddler (Little House in the Big Woods, especially, is very simply written), as well as some of the books in the Chronicles of Narnia. Possibly Beverly Cleary's Ramona/Henry books? They might also be big enough for the first couple (original) Boxcar Children type mysteries. Hadn't thought of it before, but there are some adoption-sensitive issues there since the kids' parents die and they're terrified to go live with their grandfather. I've never read them, but my neighbors loved the Magic Treehouse mysteries for their 4 and 6 year old - easy chapter books, supposedly. I figure even if young kids don't understand everything, reading chapter books lets them pick up bits and pieces, exposes them to good books, and keeps parents from going insane by reading the same inane picture books 400 times.
Oh, and maybe The Mouse and the Motorcycle, also by Beverly Cleary: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mouse_and_the_Motorcycle
I love when you share their little conversations. They're cracking me up too. And melting my heart! :)
I just love, love, LOVE your stories of all the cute things the girls say ... and the "how do you make babies" ... ROFL!!!! :-D
Hopefully Mya's temper tantrums grow less frequent ... Luke has some of those same wild tantrums where he flings and flails and flops on the floor / against objects / etc. Hopefully it is just a "being 2" thing!
